Rita Sharma

RP + British Indian (Hindi, Punjabi). Friendly, warm, reassuring, youthful, approachable, natural

While growing up in Hounslow, Rita acted in and wrote for local community theatre. She went on to work with the Royal Court Young People’s Theatre. Her voice was picked from tons of auditionees at The Children’s Channel, starting her on her voiceover career.

Rita’s extensive voice work since then has included:
•   Radio ads – TFL Oxford Street Transformation Campaign, Vodafone International Campaign, Asda
•   Online ads – Spotify Podcasts campaign, Uber Digital Rider Campaign
•   TV narration – Channel 4 “Don’t Kick Us Out” doc, BBC Newsnight transgender film, and a series of 16 films for Teachers TV
•   Sponsorship idents and promos – Granada
•   and Dubbing/ ADR/Revoicing – “My Shocking Story”, “Hotel Babylon”.

Rita mostly voices in straight RP, but can also work in Hindi, Punjabi and Indian-accented English, and is able to read the Devanagari (Hindi) and Gurmukhi (Punjabi) scripts.

This versatility has come in especially handy in her work on non-fiction audio books, some requiring correct pronunciation of Sanskrit words. Whether working in RP or either of the above Indian languages, she is able to bring a naturalness and clarity to academic texts that hugely increases their accessibility and comprehensibility.

She has voiced several political, charity and NGO films requiring sensitive delivery, such as “Weapons Manufacturers Targeting British Children” for Momentum, and a Save The Children animation on Rohingya Muslims, in which she did character work to convey a mother’s harrowing experience. Other work in this category has included films for the Millennium Development Fund (shown at the UN Development Meeting in Liberia) and for the International Development Law Organisation (shown at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva).

She has also voiced e-learning and training films, among them work for Open University (a counselling animation in which she played the counsellor), Vodafone, and TESS India (teacher training films for Indian teachers in India), and voice prompt recording for non-diagnostic blood pressure and weight machines installed in chemists across the country.

She was chosen to voice the Hindi versions of a series of animated films by Aardman Animations for The World’s Largest Lesson, which aims to teach children in over 100 countries about the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This project was in partnership with UNICEF and UNESCO.

Other work in Hindi and Punjabi has included public information films such as a BMA Covid-19 Information Film for Vulnerable Migrants (Punjabi), a Digital Switchover film (Punjabi), an NHS Stroke Awareness TV Ad (Hindi) and revoicing a series of English NHS cancer screening films (Hindi and Punjabi). This last required Rita to do a wide variety of voices, giving character to the medical staff and patients as well as doing straight, clear, instructional voicing of the important medical information.

She has also voiced platform announcements for Heathrow Express and the Heathrow Terminal 5 Virtual Mannequin (Hindi) as well as Inflight Safety Announcements for Britsh Airways (Punjabi) and South African Airways (Hindi).

As an actor, she has recorded many fictional audiobooks. These have run the gamut from children’s books to The Kama Sutra, and required her to voice characters ranging from aged eight to 80 in many different accents.
